To achieve this goal, the EU has implemented a wide range of measures aimed at reducing waste and making products more sustainable. In March 2022, the first package of measures focused on accelerating this transition was launched.

These initiatives include new legislation and revisions to existing standards and challenge key sectors of the economy to adopt more circular practices at all stages of the value chain, from design to final consumption.

The European action plan emphasises the need to integrate circularity and sustainability into all stages of production and identifies 7 key sectors to lead this transition:

Plastics

In an attempt to combat the pollution caused by plastic waste, the European Commission proposed a European strategy for plastics in January 2018 to ensure that by 2030 every piece of plastic packaging can be reused or recycled. The same strategy also aimed to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics and the use of microplastics.

Textiles

Textile production consumes large quantities of raw materials and water, and currently only 1% of the materials used are recycled. To meet this challenge, in March 2020 the European Union presented the Strategy for Sustainability and Circularity in Textiles.

This strategy sets the goal that by 2030, textile products placed on the EU market should be long-lasting and recyclable, and that they should be made as much as possible from recycled fibres and free of hazardous substances.

Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies

Waste electrical and electronic equipment is the fastest growing waste in the European Union and only less than 40 % is recycled. MEPs want the EU to promote longer product lifetimes through reuse and repair.

Food, water and nutrients

In the European Union, it is estimated that 10% of all food produced ends up lost or wasted. In response to this problem, the EC is calling for a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030, in line with the objectives set out in the "From Plate to Plate" Strategy, which aims for a more sustainable and efficient food system.

Packaging

In 2021, each person in the European Union generated an average of 189kg of packaging waste. In April 2024, Parliament approved an agreement reached with the Council on revising EU rules on packaging and packaging waste to reduce its quantity.

Batteries and vehicles

New rules require the production and material of all batteries on the European market to have a minimal carbon footprint and respect human rights.

Construction and buildings

The construction sector accounts for more than 35 % of the European Union's total waste. To meet this challenge, the useful life of buildings must be extended, targets must be set to reduce the carbon footprint of materials and minimum energy efficiency and resource use requirements must be implemented. In March 2024, the European Parliament approved an update to the rules on the energy performance of buildings, with the aim of creating a climate-neutral construction sector by 2050.

The Role of R3 Natura in Circularity

Transforming waste into new resources is key to building a more sustainable future.
